Make a difference in the lives of these girls!

Education is the backbone of any society and it is rightly said, “When you educate a girl, you educate a nation.” With that belief, the Mahabodhi Residential School, in a distinct corner of Mizoram, is constructing a hostel for underprivileged indigenous Chakma girls, and seeking funds for the noble cause.

The school currently has a total of 95 students, including 33 girls. To encourage more girls from the community to get educated, the school is adding a girls’ hostel and is raising funds through So far, the school has raised around INR 1.25 lakhs through an NGO, India Charitable Foundation, and contribution from the locals. It has started the construction of the basic structure of the hostel. However, it still requires an additional of INR 3 lakhs for completing the task.

Work in progress at the school

To eradicate illiteracy and poverty among the indigenous minority Chakma community in Mizoram, an NGO, ‘The Ultimate Truth Preaching Mission’, established Ahimsa School for junior classes in 2011 and Mahabodhi Residential School for senior students in 2016, at Tuichawng village, under Lunglei District, Mizoram, India.

Activities undertaken at the school

The school’s building was funded by Ven. Ananda Bhante of Mahabodhi Society, Bengaluru, while the daily operation of the school is being run with public donation. An English-medium school, it follows the syllabus prescribed by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE).

The main objective of establishing the school is to provide educational facilities to the students who complete the elementary stage of education every year from Tuichawng and surrounding villages, but are not able to pursue their further studies by going to places such as Lungsen, Tlabung and Lunglei due to poverty. Besides the regular courses of studies offered, the school aims at implementing extra-curricular activities such as singing, music, fine arts, games and sports.
