Problems and hard times show us what we are capable of

A rough diamond looks like a piece of ordinary, dull glass. It is only after it is cut and polished and facetted that it achieves its full glory, displaying the sparkling brightness and splash of colours for which it is famous. It has to go through “difficult times” to reach its destination as a shining, attractive, dazzling gem. Similarly, we human beings also have to go through a lot of hardships and tough, demanding, gruelling situations before we can reach our goals. It is only through effort, sacrifices and challenges that we fulfil our dreams and accomplish what we desire.

Life is uncertain, it is demanding and we come face-to-face with a variety of predicaments. But these are good for us. Problems and hard times show us what we are capable of. They bring out our strengths and help us overcome the tough times. They enable us to understand what can and what cannot be done, they set boundaries and teach us how to go forward and win against all odds.

How do you conquer adversity and emerge victorious? It is not all that difficult if you keep a few things in mind:

  1. Challenge yourself – Human beings are resistant to change. They like to continue with things exactly the way they are. They are afraid to change the status quo. But you need to get out of your complacency, you need to push yourself beyond your limits. You need to step out of your circle of comfort and tackle problems head-on. The more you challenge yourself the more you will learn and be able to go ahead.
  2. Involve yourself in inspiring activities – Do things you love, things that inspire you and make you feel good. Don’t force yourself to do something that you are not comfortable with – you can never give it your best.
  3. Have a system of rewards and penalties for yourself – When you reach a goal or do something good, treat yourself – it will motivate you to do even better. And if you fail to do something set up a punishment for yourself so that you are not tempted to fail again; instead you put in greater effort next time.
  4. Keep distractions at bay – You will come across many situations when something or the other takes your attention away from what you are doing. This results in your not being able to complete what you set out to do. Avoid such distractions and concentrate on the task in hand.

So whenever you are faced with trouble or you are having a rough time, remember that these situations teach us valuable life lessons – do not fear them, accept them and figure out how to deal with them and when you do that you will come out a winner.
